Refrigerator and Freezer Questions

What is the average lifespan of a refrigerator?

Most refrigerators last 14–17 years. However, regular maintenance and timely repairs can extend their lifespan. Addressing minor problems quickly prevents costly breakdowns.

How cold should I keep my refrigerator and freezer?

Refrigerators should be set around 37°F to keep food fresh without wasting energy. Freezers should be set to 0°F, which ensures safe long-term storage and prevents freezer burn.

Why is my refrigerator leaking water?

Leaks often happen when the condensation drain hose becomes clogged with ice or debris. This blockage causes water to pool inside or around the appliance. Our technicians can clear the hose and prevent further damage.

Why isn’t my refrigerator cooling properly?

Several issues can cause cooling problems—dirty condenser coils, defrost system failures, or faulty fans. If you hear no fan noise or see frost on the back wall, it’s best to schedule professional service.

Symptoms and Common Fixes:

Not cooling at all – no lights

Make sure the refrigerator is plugged in. Check your circuit breaker or fuse. If in doubt, run an extension cord to another outlet and call for service.

Not cooling very well

Remove kick plate under doors and vacuum the condenser coil. Listen and watch for air movement at bottom of refrigerator.

  • No fan noise -call for service.
  • Was the fresh food or freezer door left ajar?
  • Push door switch, make sure light is turning off when door closes.
  • Look for frost on back wall of freezer.
  • If frost is present, system has a defrost problem. Call for service.
Light not working

Push in the switch in the door to see if the fan comes on. If the fan runs, the problem is just the light. Replace or tighten the bulb. If the fan does not come on, call for service.

Strange noises

Hearing sizzle and popping sounds when all else is quiet in the refrigerator means you are in defrost cycle and all is normal.

Water is leaking on floor from side by side refrigerator

If ice is present on freezer floor, your defrost drain is clogged and frozen. Remove ice from freezer floor and flush drain with hot water.

Microwave and Oven Questions

What is the average lifespan of an oven or microwave?

Gas and electric ovens typically last around 15 years. Microwave lifespan varies: budget models last about five years, while higher-end units may last up to 10 years.

How do I know if my microwave is working properly?

A properly functioning microwave heats food evenly within the recommended time. Strange noises, power failures, or error codes are signs you need repair.

Why is there moisture inside my microwave?

Moisture is common when cooking foods with high water content. However, proper ventilation is key. Make sure air vents aren’t blocked, and avoid covering the interior with plastic wrap.

Is it normal for my oven to make clicking noises?

Yes, in many cases. Gas ovens click when igniting the flame, while microwaves and electric ovens may click due to vents, timers, or metal expansion as they heat. Persistent loud noises, though, should be checked by a professional.

Washer and Dryer Questions

Why does my dryer take so long to dry?

If your dryer runs too long, start by cleaning the lint filter. Other causes include worn belts, defective coils, or damaged seals. A technician can pinpoint the issue quickly.

Why won’t my dryer turn on?

Common reasons include a broken belt, faulty door switch, or motor problems. Our certified Omaha technicians can inspect your dryer and perform the necessary repairs.

Why does my washer go off balance?

An off-balance washer often results from unevenly distributed laundry or unlevel feet. If left unchecked, it can cause serious damage. Leveling the washer or redistributing clothes usually helps.

What should I do if my washer isn’t filling with water?

First, check that the water supply is turned on and hose screens are clear. If the problem persists, the issue could be with valves, the water source, or internal components that require professional repair.

Symptoms and Common Fixes:

Won’t do anything
  • Check circuit breaker or fuse
  • Make sure washer is plugged in
  • Lift lid and close again (may reset off balance switch)
  • Check that selector buttons are pressed firmly
  • Make sure tub is centered and not leaning to one side

Dishwasher Questions

Why does my dishwasher take so long to run?

Long cycles can result from faulty heating elements or control boards. Sometimes, water simply isn’t reaching the right temperature. A professional can test and fix the heating system.

Do dishwashers need regular maintenance?

Yes. Regular maintenance prevents breakdowns. Cleaning filters, deodorizing the unit, and checking water pump performance keeps your dishwasher efficient and odor-free.

Why are my dishes coming out spotty?

White spots are usually caused by hard water, detergent issues, or incorrect water temperature. You can use vinegar during the rinse cycle for a temporary fix, but a water softener or rinse aid may be needed for long-term results.
