Troubleshooting a Furnace

 

Quick Tips

What's the symptom?

  • Is the fan running?
    • YES:
      • Make sure thermostat is set at a higher temp than room temp.
    • NO:
      • Make sure thermostat is set to "HEAT" and set at a temperature higher than room temperature.
      • Make sure switch on side of furnace is "ON" and fuse next to switch is good.
      • Turn furnace switch off, wait 1 minute and turn back on.
      • Make sure breaker is not tripped.
      • Check to see if pilot is off.
        Make sure the door to the furnace is latched in place.
  • Make sure thermostat is set at a lower temperature than room temperature and fan is set to "AUTO".
  • If temperature keeps going up, shut off furnace switch or breaker. IF BURNER STILL STAYS ON, TURN POWER BACK ON AND CALL SERVICEONE.
  • WINTER- Probably the humidifier, turn the water valve to "OFF" to prevent further leaking until repaired.
  • SUMMER- Probably a condensate leak, turn off the air conditioner
  • to prevent further leaking until repaired. (see air conditioner troubleshooting tips)
  • Check for dirty filter (filters should be changed once a month)
  • Check for closed or obstructed registers (both cold & warm returns)

What's the symptom?

  • Humidistat, white line, may be turned below set point. Turn upper portion higher.
  • Humidistat should be set at 35%, if outside temperature is above 25 degrees, 25%, if below 25 degrees.
  • Check damper control. General brand, turn control to "high", other brands-open damper on 5-6" pipe.
Turn humidistat control to 25% or turn damper control to "low"
  • Remove drain hose and blow into hose to clear obstruction.
  • Unplug humidifier or turn to lowest setting.
  • Turn off water supply and call for service.
